here's the progress I've been making on some upgrades on my Escort RST S2... :)

Image

after the summer I put the escort in the garage for a bit of restoration and to install the 2.0ltr zvh I've been building in my spare time this year..
up on stand ready for the work to start..
Image

I picked up a low mileage st170 bottom end from a online auction for a very good price :D

Image

and took it apart for some fettling . .

Image
Image

first thing was to clean the block up, clear all the oil galleries and give it a coat of red engine paint ;)

Image

so far ive rebuilt the bottom end with new bearings, gaskets, full set of ARP fasteners all through.. rotatioally balanced the crank, flywheel, and clutch cover and reassembled it :D :D

Image
balanced crank back in with the new bearings :D

I'll try and keep this updated as i go along with the rebuild :)

time for a wee update :)
with the block and balanced crank assembled it was time to put the rods and piston's in...

Image
these are the st170 rods and mahle pistons, me and my dad machined 1mm off the top using a milling machine to reduce the compression ratio :D I had to order new rings from Mahle in Germany coz they are different from normal zetecs pistons.

installed pistons and rods ->
Image

the st170 sump is the 2 piece sump like the Black-Top zetec's, these will work well in the Series2 RST but i put some inlet unions in for the oil returns from the turbo at the front :) I drilled through cast in mounting bosses that are spare in the side of the upper sump and drill and tapped for some unions
Image
Image
return from breather system in the back->
Image
Image

Will get some more pictures of the progress when i get chance to download them :D

time for another update... :)

I had the st170 sump powder coated and bolted on :)

Image

i put the flywheel on, its an rs turbo 220mm item, i had to drill the flywheel bolt holes out by 0.5mm to 11mm..

Image

...with an AP cerametallic clutch :D

Then i moved onto building the Stg3 Big Valve cylinder head up..

Image
nice big stainless valves, brandnew rockers, collets and aluminium valve spring retainers 8-) 8-)
Image

this was the engine in the stand, i timed the Piper285t2 cam up using the vernier, sorted out a few bits and bobs and got it ready for installing into my Escort . . . :D
Image

which is what i did today ->
Image

engine installed on its mounts..
Image

hope to have it ready to run soon :)

hello,

thought I'd start up the rebuild thread for my Series 2... so now its the re-re-build thread

story so far -

I started building a full 2ltr zetec turbo and doing a bit of restoration work including seam welding in preparation for some big power ;)

I started by taking out the standard fuse box and repairing the bulkhead

Image

Image

the fuse box will live inside the car now :)

then it was the turn of the battery tray to come out, when i took this out the joint between the inner wing and passenger footwell required renewing
